REAL HAS LOST TO BOTTOM TEAM 17 TIMES

Ghosts in the basement

Ghosts in the basement

On paper, a fixture against the team at the bottom of the table ought to be a blessing. But history shows that Real Madrid should not take anything for granted in these sorts of games. In all, 'Los Blancos' have lost to so-called 'basement boys' on some 17 different occasions.
The last time the Bernabéu club was beaten by the side propping up the division was in the 03-04 season, when Carlos Queiroz's side was defeated 2-1 away at relegated Real Murcia (Luis García bagged a brace for the hosts, with Guti grabbing a late consolation).
The result came in gameweek 37, at the tail end of a dreadful run of form that would see 'Los Blancos' let an eight-point lead slip in the last seven games of the season to hand Rafa Benítez's Valencia the title.
Bottoms up for Betis
A look back over the history books reveals two examples to give Betis hope, in spite of its lowly league position. The Andalusian side has twice beaten Real Madrid before when at the bottom of the table, winning 3-1 in the 1942-43 season and 2-1 thirty years later, in the 1972-3 campaign.
