AFTER THOSE OF DI STÉFANO AND KOPA

Ronaldo, third Ballon d'Or 100% made in Madrid

SANTIAGO SIGUERO 01/14/2014
Cristiano Ronaldo won the third Ballon d'Or which was 100% made in Madrid on Monday, having won the award after playing at least a full calendar year - over which the accolade is judged - wearing the Madrid shirt. Other players have received the award as members of the Real Madrid squad, but largely based on their accomplishments with their previous clubs or their national teams.
Di Stéfano was the first Real Madrid player to win a Ballon d'Or. He arrived at the club in 1953 and won the award in 1957 and 1959, when he led Real Madrid through the best period in its history, winning five consecutive European Cups. He was followed by Raymond Kopa, a Madrid player from 1956 onwards, who won the award in 1958 after coming third in the voting in 1956 and 1957, and subsequently taking the runner's up spot in 1959.
Now Cristiano, who won the award in 2008 as a Manchester United player, has once again been acknowledged as the winner of the most prestigious individual prize in world football, this time with 'Los Blancos'.
Three other players have won the Ballon d'Or while wearing a Real Madrid shirt, but after having signed for the club in the summer of the calendar year corresponding to the trophy. The first was Luis Figo, who won it in 2000 after having left behind the Nou Camp for the Bernabéu. He was followed by Ronaldo in 2002, who moved to Spain from Inter Milan after having guided Brazil to its fifth World Cup title. Then there was Fabio Cannavaro (Juventus), who emulated the Brazilian's achievements with Italy in the Germany 2006 World Cup.
