Seedorf available for Milan job, says representative

Seedorf available for Milan job, says representative
The Dutchman is believed to be sitting in pole position to succeed Massimiliano Allegri as the new man in charge at the San Siro side
Clarence Seedorf's representative Deborah Martin has made it clear that the Botafogo midfielder would be available if AC Milan were to approach him for the position of head coach.

The San Siro side are in the market for a new coach after giving Massimiliano Allegri the sack on Monday morning following their disappointing performances in 2013-14.

They have appointed Mauro Tassotti as caretaker boss ahead of Wednesday's Coppa Italia match against Spezia, but Seedorf is believed to be sitting in pole position to get the role on a permanent basis.

"There is not much to say about everything that has been written about Seedorf, but a number of things that have been reported are incorrect," the Dutchman's agent told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I negotiated the contract of Clarence with Botafogo and he has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave the club without compensation on certain occasions, as long as he doesn't play for another team.

"I would also like to point out that Clarence now has all the necessary papers to coach and has taken all the steps needed in Netherlands and Brazil."

Seedorf, 37, left Milan for Botafogo in the summer of 2012 after a 10-year spell with the Rossoneri.

Review: 'Dedh Ishqiya

Review: 'Dedh Ishqiya'

Abhishek Chaubey's Dedh Ishqiya, starring Naseeruddin Shah, Madhuri Dixit, Arshad Warsi and Huma Qureshi, is a majestic ode to life, love, lust
Dedh Ishqiya Review

Just to hear these roguish, duplicitous characters walk the talk is a pleasure beyond the ordinary. Make no mistake. 'Dedh Ishqiya' walks many extra miles beyond your highest expectations. It negotiates a nawabi era long gone, or perhaps never in existence. And it does so with a bracing bewildering beguiling blend of aristocratic arrogance and ironic humility.

Welcome to the world of quaint contradictions. This is Mehmoodabad, a place close to yet far from Lucknow where time stops still. Where mushairas and mujras jostle with very contemporary preoccupations, like making fast bucks.

The one thing that can be said with supreme certainty about 'Dedh Ishqiya' is that you've never seen such a marriage of old-world charm and new-world subterfuge before.
Who in his right mind except the utterly wacked-out Babban (Arshad Warsi) would say, "Tumhari saari nawaabi, tumhare pichwade mein ghused dunga," and get away with it? Yup, nawaabi gets its twinkle-eyed comeuppance in this tale of the fading Begum (Madhuri Dixit) and her besotted suitors.
There is a delightful sequence in Madhuri's mysteriously-lit inner chamber where Naseeruddin Shah and Madhuri exchange courtly confidence while their respective sidekicks discuss the pluses and minuses of latest I-Phones.

A sequence such as this draws out the dynamics of the old and the new world, and the ideological clashes that define life in certain cultures which are defined not so much by contemporary existences as by nostalgia.
This is a world that exists only as an idea. Director Abhishek Chaubey gives a tantalising tangibility to the non-existent world in this boudoir-based burlesque where autumnal characters filch resplendent Urdu poetry from their peers and pass it off as their own to gain brownie points with the beauteous patroness of the fine arts, who incidentally is not quite what she seems. But hush!
Without giving away the plot I'd like to say nothing is as it seems.
The roguish deceptions of two of the four principal characters, Khalujaan (Naseer) and Babban are known to us from the first film 'Ishqiya', in which the Naseer-Arshad duo more than met their match in the spunky Vidya Balan.

The location has now changed. And so have the female protagonists. The rustic cow dung compulsions of Balan's burlesque in 'Ishqiya' are now replaced by the decorous ambrosial but decadent tragic aristocracy of Madhuri's character - Begum Para.
When we first meet Begum Para, she strikes us as a beautiful anachronism. Honestly, this is a 'Para'-normal situation! Madhuri's lahja, tehzeeb, adaas, aahen gile-shikwe remind us of Meena Kumari in 'Pakeezah'. But the lady has a past, and a future. She is no walkover, although she pretends to be one.
Her lady-in-waiting (a very Shakespearean touch, that) is played by the exorbitantly sexy Huma Qureshi, who is growing into one of our more engaging contemporary actresses.
I really can't imagine anyone but Huma bringing the same spirit of libidinous chutzpah to the character. She is in many ways superior to the film's main attraction, Madhuri who I felt struck some wrong notes in her character's faltering firmament.
But when Madhuri dances to Birju Maharaj's choreography we tend to forget and forgive all the false notes in the characterisations.
We revel in the raga of a romance long gone-by.

Pique agrees new Barcelona deal as Chelsea, Manchester City & United approaches are rebuffed

Pique agrees new Barcelona deal as Chelsea, Manchester City & United approaches are rebuffed
The 26-year-old will put pen to paper on a €7 million-a-year contract extension at Camp Nou, tying him to the club until 2018, despite interest from the Premier League and Serie A

Gerard Pique has agreed to sign a new contract at Barcelona after approaches from ChelseaManchester City and Manchester United were all rebuffed, Goal can reveal.

VIEW FROM SPAIN
By Ben Hayward in Barcelona

Gerard Pique has been below his best for some time now and the defender’s poor performances proved a cause for concern at Camp Nou, but the Spain centre-back has regained some of his sharpness in recent weeks and his impeccable display at Atletico Madrid on Saturday night was his finest in recent memory.

Pique is out of contract in 2015 and Barca, having recently renewed Andres Iniesta's terms, have now switched their attentions to the defence.

The Catalans are close to signing German goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen as a replacement for Victor Valdes, who will leave in the summer, and are also in talks with both Marc Bartra and Martin Montoya over new deals - with both players out of contract in June.

With captain Carles Puyol reaching the twilight of his career, Barca see Pique as their defensive lynchpin for years to come and also a possible skipper to succeed his veteran central-defensive partner in the future.
The 26-year-old, whose existing deal was due to enter its final season this summer, was also approached by Serie A champions Juventus but has committed his future to the Camp Nou giants.

Barcelona have offered to pay the defender €7 million-a-year after tax to reflect his status as a firs choice for both the Spanish champions and his national team.

The Premier League trio all made informal approaches to gauge whether Pique could be tempted back to England, after he left Old Trafford for Catalunya in 2009, but received indications that he would not consider a move away from Barca.

"No club in the world had a single chance," a close friend told Goal. "Gerard belongs to Barcelona."

The terms of the new contract - one of the most generous ever awarded to a defender - are also the product of internal pressure to improve the salaries of Barca's key players caused by Neymar's hugely expensive acquisition from Santos.

Though Neymar's personal terms were structured in a fashion that Barca could present his base salary as €7m net, other payments to the Brazilian and his family inflated his effective earnings well beyond that sum.

In June, Barcelona vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu announced that the club had paid €57m [£48m] to Santos, and three companies - DIS Esporte, Terceira Estrela Investimentos and N&N - for Neymar. The forward's father owns N&N, which is understood to have received €40m [£33m] of that outlay. Barca had already spent €10m [£8.3m] in December 2011 to acquire a first option on Neymar's transfer from Brazil.

The transaction has proved so controversial that it is currently under investigation by the Spanish state. "The prosecutor’s decision puts in doubt an impeccable business operation that has allowed FCB to obtain, for €57m, a player who is the envy of all our competitors," said Barcelona in a statement.

ALREADY HAPPY TO BE IN FINAL GROUP OF PLAYERS

Cristiano Ronaldo didn't want to count his chickens before they hatch: "I'm happy to have made it onto the podium. That's already an achievement for me. It makes me very happy to be here. We all want to win – I'm not going to lie to you – but as I have already said, what's really important to me is to always do the very best that I can".
Cristiano explained that he's "spoken with Blatter to clear something up, but that everything is ok now", before continuing, "I'm up here once again and I'm very proud to be one of the three best in the world for another year. To achieve that you need to always give your all and to compete against players of immense quality".
Also speaking at the press conference prior to the awards ceremony, Leo Messi said that "having got this far is already a prize in itself. It's my seventh year at this awards ceremony. That's already more than enough in itself. It would be great to win it again, but just being here has made me very happy already".

DRAXLER CAN BE NEW VAN PERSIE FOR ARSENAL

Draxler can become an Arsenal god like Henry & Van Persie
Correspondent Column: Arsene Wenger is weighing up a January move for the German youngster, who has the potential to become an attacking great in north London

DRAXLER CAN BE NEW VAN PERSIE FOR ARSENAL

It might sound like a lot of money for Arsenal to be paying so soon after signing Mesut Ozil but the €48 million move being weighed up for Julian Draxler, would be an absolute bargain should Arsene Wenger conclude a deal for the Schalke attacker.

For that price Arsenal would be acquiring the services of a player - not only of stratospheric potential - but one who is already among the top performers on the continent.

Quite simply, his signature would be the catalyst for Arsenal to take a step to the next level.

Schalke, for their part, seem to already be making plans for life without their highly-prized youth prospect. Last week they secured the services for next season of Sidney Sam at a cost of around £2m. The Germany international is capable of playing either side of the attack and can fill any slot left vacant in the Schalke team by Draxler. A €45.8m profit on a youth team product with a replacement sourced already would not be a bad bit of business on the part of Horst Heldt - the Schalke general manager.

Even if they do end up holding onto Draxler through January to the summer, Schalke have no realistic shot of keeping him for the duration of his latest contract. He signed it at the end of last season - through 2018 - on improved terms. But in all honesty it was an exercise in inflating Draxler's price more than anything else. By committing the attacker to a new deal, Schalke guaranteed themselves a few Euros more.

Simply put, Draxler cannot fulfil his potential at Schalke. He is a player who needs a team around him who play with more consistency. He needs a coach with a better grasp of things than Jens Keller. His shunting back to the left this season for the accommodation of Kevin-Prince Boateng a damning indictment of Keller's inability to see the most effective channel to goal in his squad.

Despite being only 20, Draxler is not shy about speaking up for himself either and, in early winter, questioned his coach's decision to field him back out wide. Not only physically strong, but headstrong too. Despite the talent in their squad, Schalke look an unsteady bet for Champions League football next season and that is not the type of circumstance in which one of Germany's brightest talents should find himself.

With Arsene Wenger guiding the next, key, portion of his career, there would be no limit to what Draxler could achieve. Wenger, previously, converted the left wingers Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie into north London goalscoring gods and the indications are that he has similar plans afoot for Draxler.

The recent glut of German attacking midfield talent have all been fielded at various intervals by club coaches, as well as Joachim Low, at centre forward. Count among that number Andre Schurrle, Mario Gotze, Marco Reus and Max Kruse. There is no indication that Draxler is incapable of performing the same function. He has demonstrated, since making his debut three years ago for Schalke, that he can play anywhere across the attacking midfield line and even up front.

This is a player who can become a great - provided he is at the right club. A wonderfully balanced, two-footed attacker with dribbling abilities, an eye for a pass and a goal, Draxler's got it all. And standing at roughly 6'2, he is a strapping physical specimen. Arsenal could have the next Cristiano Ronaldo on their hands.

For that, €48m is small change indeed.

BALLON D'OR VOTE SHOWS ENGLISH SICKNESS

It is Ballon d'Or day but there will not be a lot of news about the award for best individual player of 2013 in England. It is a long time since the Premier League had any relevance in that respect.

There is no disputing that the final three candidates - Lionel Messi, Franck Ribery and Cristiano Ronaldo - deserve the plaudits but it is a blow to English football that no player available to Roy Hodgson was among the final 23 candidates.

SOUTHAMPTON LATEST
12/1Luke Shaw is 12/1 with William Hill to make England's World Cup squad next summer
It says plenty about the calibre of player now being developed in England. They are not making a significant impact on the world stage. There is no club towards the top of the Premier League table - like Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund or Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga - which still prides itself on developing home grown prospects through the youth academy.

Increasingly, the native players at Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal are either the wrong side of 30 or peripheral squad figures - albeit with a few notable exceptions. When the likes of John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick retire the situation will be bleaker still.

The days of World Cup 2002 or Euro 2004 - when the cream of Premier League talent was available to Sven Goran Eriksson - are well and truly over. It seems that a run of decent form for any club in the league will put a player in the national team picture; Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert are the options now where once Andy Cole and Robbie Fowler were struggling even for a squad place.

Messi, Ribery and Ronaldo are all 'foreigners' in the leagues in which they ply their trades. Perhaps more Englishmen need to follow the path of David Beckham and test themselves in one of Europe's other top competitions.

MCGEADY DEAL A STEAL FOR EVERTON

Speaking to Roberto Martinez about the Ireland national team while they were struggling under Giovanni Trapattoni, the Everton manager was bemused that they were faring badly considering the players in their ranks.

He named Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy as two of the chief reasons why the Irish should have been doing better and also identified Aiden McGeady as an attacker capable of turning matches. One of the best wingers in Europe, in fact, is how Martinez described McGeady and he revealed that he attempted to sign the 27-year-old while in charge of Wigan.

His excitement at the prospect of coaching Coleman was well judged as the full-back has become one of the best in his position in the Premier League under Martinez. Similarly, the Spaniard knew what he liked about McCarthy when he brought him south of the border from Hamilton and has since converted him into one of the brightest midfield talents in the country. The impact with McGeady will be similar; it is a signing the manager truly relishes.

Martinez has pulled off one of the transfer coups of the season, bringing in the former Celtic man for a cut-price £1.7 million deal. He will fit perfectly into the Everton way of playing and deliver a lot for his side when they are in sustained possession as well as on the counter attack.

McCarthy, Romelu Lukaku and Gareth Barry have been three of the best deals in the league this season and testament to Martinez's ability to spot key components for his own side at other clubs.

Come the end of the season, with Everton in the mix for Europe, expect McGeady to feature on that list too.

BOTTOM HALF WEAKER THAN EVER BUT SACKINGS NOT THE SOLUTION

While the top teams in the Premier League can play decent football to good standard, the rope ladder has well and truly been pulled up on those beneath. There is a gap of seven points between Southampton in ninth place and Hull City in 10th. From Hull and Crystal Palace at the bottom - a total of 11 teams - there is a six-point gap.

While competitiveness among the top teams is to be lauded as an indicator of overall quality, a similar situation at the bottom does not mean the same thing. A sequence of two or three matches unbeaten will take any team out of trouble in the space of a week or two.

Club owners, then, at those 11 teams should take it as a fact that no matter what they do they will be in the relegation shake-up at the end of the season. Their squads are not good enough to do any better.

What is needed now among them is solidity, stability and a chance for managers to put their ideas across without the fear of losing their job. Changes have been made at Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Fulham, West Brom and Cardiff to no notable effect. Sacking coaches does not provide the solution

With passion, anything is possible, says rock climber Nazia Parveen

A screengrab from the video showing Nazia Parveen.
There is a common perception that women cannot compete with men. Nazia Parveen begs to differ.
Pakistan’s high-achieving sportsperson said our male dominating society finds it difficult to accept that women can move ahead of men. However, she said “any target can be achieved with passion and focus; women can beat men.”
Originally from Bajaur Agency, Parveen climbs and paraglides too. She made history as the first woman to take part in the two-day International Rock Climbing Competition in Singapore.

Parveen’s brother recalled her climbing walls and trees even when she was a young child rather than playing with dolls like girls of her age.
The young sportsperson had won 13 climbing events, receiving several best player awards – many a time beating male participants. She had also played badminton, basketball and handball at local level.
Parveen wants to change how people view Pakistan and prove that it is a capable country.
“I am Nazia Parveen, I am Pakistan,” she said.

AGÜERO CONFIDENT THAT CITY WILL KNOCK BARÇA OUT

Messi is always the best"

Messi is always the best
VERÓNICA BRUNATI 01/13/2014
On the 18th February, Leo Messi and Sergio Agüero will face each other on the field of play with a conflict of interest. One will be playing for Barça, the other for Manchester City. The ex-Atlético de Madrid player has spoken highly of his friend and fellow Argentinian in an interview with ESPN Rivadavia.
"Messi is from another planet, and he will always be the best player in the world. I think he will win the Ballon d'Or. Cristiano Ronaldo has done some great things too, but the best one is always Messi even if he only scores one goal a year", he said.
Agüero keeps in touch with Messi. "We spoke at the New Year and we said that whichever one of us doesn't get through in the Champions League will be hungrier when it is time for the World Cup Finals. We talked about the match, but didn't bet anything. We both hope it will be a good game, and if City wins, then so much the better," he said.
Agüero went on to say that "Messi has done very well to rest up and recover properly. As long as we are mentally all right, then we don't think about injuries".
For the Manchester City player, the game against Barcelona will be a great one. "Barcelona is the best team in the world and it is going to be hard. We are fine and we have a good squad. It is going to be a very even game". And he is quite convinced that "in the first (home) leg we will have to get a good result. Games have to be played out, and it will certainly be difficult".
Agüero is now very much better after injury, and he is hoping to play again as soon as possible
