Labourers win compensation after wages misery in Oman

A group of 36 Bangladeshi labourers who had been working for a construction firm in Oman without regular salaries for over two years will receive compensation, the country's Labour Court has said.

The men, who are now waiting for their tickets and passports, will be receive between OR1,000 to OR1,500 on the day of their departure, Muscat Daily reported. The name of the construction firm was not disclosed.

Sheikh Sekander Ali, the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Oman expressed his “deep appreciation' to all Omani authorities concerned who were involved in the process of delivering justice to a good number of affected Bangladeshis”, the paper said.

At first the salaries were erratic and then were stopped altogether, the labourers were quoted as saying.

They added in comments published by the paper that basic amenities like food were not provided and that they lived in a camp in Mabela Industrial Estate without electricity or proper water supply.
