Bassem Tops Google Zeitgeist
Despite attempts to shut him up, Bassem Youssef is still beating the censors online, amid rumours of a 2014 TV comeback. The controversial comic, axed for ruffling feathers among Egypt's military elite, has been named Egypts most-searched person on the web, according to 2013 rankings by Google.
Youssef ranked top in Googles ‘Zeitgeist rankings as Egypts top ‘trending person of the year, attracting more web enquiries than Egypt's army chief General Abdel Fatah el-Sisi and former President Mohamed Morsi. The U.S. internet giant found that ‘Ramadan Series 2013 was the most popular search term overall in Egypt.The Zietgiest study analysed more than one trillion searches performed globally throughout the year.
Egyptians are looking for more political and social figures, when they search according to the latest figures. Meanwhile, here at CairoScene, our spies tell us that Youssef is currently in talks with more than one Egyptian broadcaster in a move which may spark a bidding war between competing channels.
