World Trade Center stunts trigger security concerns

NEW YORK: A team of daredevil parachutists and a lone teenager have triggered fears about lax security at New York’s rebuilt World Trade Center, an emblem of the city’s resilience and renewal after the horrors of 9/11.
Within the space of a fortnight, revelations of repeated security breaches at what should be one of the most tightly guarded buildings in the United States have been met with incredulity by locals.
The first breach took place at night on September 30 last year, when three base-jumpers – one of whom worked on the site – accessed the tower before leaping off and descending to the streets of Manhattan.
The second case, on March 16, saw a 16-year-old enthusiast slip through a fence and take an elevator to the 84th floor of the highly symbolic building.
He then made his way up to the 104th floor, sneaking past a sleeping guard, before using a ladder to reach the spire at the top of the 541-meter construction.
The guard caught napping was subsequently fired. The teenager was arrested and charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass.
In the base-jumping case, four men – the three parachutists and a lookout – were arrested and charged this week following a five-and-a-half month investigation.
A video of the base-jumpers’ daring nighttime descent appeared online this week, quickly racking up more than a million views.
One of the men arrested, 33-year-old Andrew Rossig, said breaching security at the site had required “no effort whatsoever.”
“We just kind of walked in. It’s supposed to be the most secure building in the world,” he said.
“God forbid it was somebody else getting in there with a real intention to harm New Yorkers.”
New York Police Commissioner William Bratton decried the stunt, however.
“These men violated the law and placed themselves, as well as others, in danger,” he said as he announced the arrests.
“Being a thrill-seeker does not give immunity from the law.”
Security for One World Trade Center, which will become the tallest building in the United States when it opens in 2015, is now shared between the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Durst Organization real estate company, which manages and leases the site, Durst communications chief Jordan Barowitz told AFP.
When the base-jumpers pulled off their stunt, the Port Authority was solely in charge of security, he emphasized.
“We are in charge of the security inside the site since January. Outside, it’s Port Authority,” Barowitz said.
“We are very concerned and we are working with the Port Authority to improve the security of the site,” he added.
He did not reveal the number of personnel deployed to guard the tower, which has already leased 55 percent of its office space ahead of the opening.
Port Authority spokesman Joseph Dunne said officials were continuing to “reassess” security practices at the site and were looking at ways of ensuring it was “as secure as possible.”
“We take security and these type of infractions extremely seriously and will prosecute violators,” he added.
In the aftermath of this week’s revelation about the base-jumpers, two journalists from CNN tried unsuccessfully to penetrate the site last Tuesday, before being arrested.
The new World Trade Center is being erected on the site of the old Twin Towers, which was destroyed by al Qaeda suicide attackers on September 11, 2001, killing nearly 2,800 people.
Once completed, the complex will include a museum, a permanent outdoor memorial, five skyscrapers, a subway station, shops and an arts center.

Putin has 'no intention' of further military moves into Ukraine: Ban

UNITED NATIONS/UNITED STATES: The United Nations (UN) secretary general said Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin assured him he had no intention of ordering further military incursions into Ukrainian territory.
Ban Ki-moon made the remarks to reporters after briefing the UN Security Council on his recent talks in Moscow and Kiev, as he urged the international community to de-escalate the crisis.
He responded to a question on whether Putin gave him any assurances that Russia was not planning to go into southern and eastern Ukraine after the annexation of Crimea.
Putin told Ban “that he had no intention to make any military move. I should also tell you at the same time that President Putin also expressed his concern about some extreme radical elements and any such movement along the border lines,” the UN chief said.
“The emotions were running high and tensions have been very highly charged. Therefore my immediate priority was to urge the leaders of both (sides) to engage in direct dialogue.”
He added: “I also urged the leaders of the Ukrainian authorities to address all the domestic concerns which they may have which may also create concerns to the Russian side.”
But “he (Putin) assured me he would have no such intention” on further military initiatives, Ban said.
The UN chief also said he was “deeply concerned” that international divisions, with Russia and the West pitted against each other, could harm response to other conflicts and emergencies.
“At this time of heightened tension even small sparks can ignite larger flames of unintended consequences,” Ban said.
Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin named no names but took a swipe at Western members of the Security Council, accusing them of whipping up an impression of imminent Russian aggression.
Ten to 12 countries had participated in four inspections of Russian military troops, he told reporters.
“I’m sure if they saw something dramatic they would have raised hell over it immediately,” Churkin said.
“There is no worry of any Russian initiative against Ukraine

Hashoo Group to invest billions in oil, gas exploration

The group has also committed to making investment in offshore and shale gas exploration to overcome the energy crisis in the country.. PHOTO: FILE
ISLAMABAD: The Hashoo Group has made a comeback after a gap of five years as it is expected to pump billions of rupees into the upstream petroleum sector that will give a significant boost to the country’s economy.
Zaver Petroleum Corporation, an oil and gas exploration firm and a part of the Hashoo Group, signed a long-term Musharika facility worth Rs3.2 billion with Al Baraka Bank (Pakistan) on Friday.
Musharika is a partnership structure with profit and loss sharing implications that is used in Islamic finance instead of interest-bearing loans.
The group has also committed to making investment in offshore and shale gas exploration to overcome the energy crisis in the country.
During the previous government of Pakistan Peoples Party, Orient Petroleum Limited of the Hashoo Group had backed out of investment in the oil and gas sector by selling some exploration blocks to a foreign firm. However, Group Chairman Sadruddin Hashwani called it a joint venture with the foreign company.
After the Musharika agreement, Hashwani said they were the largest investor in the sector after Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC). The group has drilled 65 wells with a massive investment so far.
He said Al Baraka Bank and Zaver Petroleum had a history of relations, which they renewed by agreeing on the Islamic mode of financing for the oil and gas sector.
He insisted that the group was making collective efforts to contribute to the economy and invest hundreds of millions of dollars.
“We are all partners who will bring prosperity and growth to Pakistan,” he said, adding they would drill two wells this year.
Zaver Petroleum Chief Executive Officer Anwar Moeen told media that the group would invest in shale gas exploration if the government offered them a good price.
There was potential in some of the fields and the group would explore if the government promised good incentives, he said.
At present, Zaver Petroleum is producing 18 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd), 9,000 barrels of crude oil per day and 49 tons of liquefied petroleum gas.

Pakistan meets kinnow export target ahead of time

KARACHI: Despite several challenges, Pakistan has met its kinnow (mandarin) export target of 300,000 tons a month before the season ends in April 2014.
“Kinnow exports have showed a rapid increase over the last year,” said Waheed Ahmed, spokesman for the All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchant Association (PFVA), on Friday.
“After meeting the export target, it is expected that the country would export an additional 15,000 to 20,000 tons by the end of April 2014.”
According to Ahmed, Pakistan has exported over 305,000 tons, worth $180 million, so far despite the fact that almost 50% of the crop was badly affected by climate changes in the country.
The production of kinnow was at least 2,100,000 tons this year.
“The Iranian market remained completely closed for the country’s fruits causing a loss of over 80,000 tons worth of exports this year,” said Ahmed.
“However, on the bright side, the country has exported 40,500 tons to Indonesia, up 15% compared to last year following the long-awaited Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) signed by the two countries.”
The temporary Russian ban on Pakistani fruits and vegetables has also caused a substantial loss to fresh fruit exports. The country succeeded in exporting only 62,000 tons to Russia against a target of 73,000.
According to Ahmed, the current fruit exports, which are in the hundreds of millions of dollars, could easily touch the billion-dollar mark if facilities, as well as the environment, needed for research and development are created in the country.
In top world markets, Pakistani kinnow has to compete with seedless mandarin and clementine from countries like Spain, Morocco, Argentina and South Africa.
“Besides, the ‘early’ and ‘late’ varieties of kinnow successfully introduced by some competitors should be introduced on a larger scale to prolong the season and availability of quality fruits,” said Ahmed

Pirlo: Tevez has proven himself an 'extraordinary' talent

Pirlo: Tevez has proven himself an 'extraordinary' talent
The playmaker has saluted the Argentine for the way in which he has lived up to his reputation as a world-class forward by storming to the top of Serie A's top goalscorers' chart
Andrea Pirlo has paid tribute to Carlos Tevez for himself a player of "extraordinary capabilities" since joiningJuventus last summer.

AC Milan appeared the Italian side most likely to sign the Argentine from former club Manchester City but a proposed move to San Siro during the 2013 January transfer window collapsed because of the two parties' inability to agree a deal.

The Rossoneri's loss proved Juve's gain, as Tevez has enjoyed a stunning debut campaign in Italy following a €14 million move to Turin, having netted 18 times in 19 Serie A appearances.

“He’s a truly great player with extraordinary capabilities," Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia. "Everyone knew it already because he had won a lot in England, but as soon as he got here he showed his value.”

Tevez's goals have put Juve within touching distance of a third successive Scudetto, with Antonio Conte's men currently 14 points clear of second-placed Roma.

Pirlo, though, is taking nothing for granted, particularly as Juve face a trick trip to the San Paolo on Sunday to face Napoli, who sit third in the standings.

“We’ve played a great season so far, but we haven’t won anything yet," the midfielder pointed out.

"Napoli are a strong side, and out there on the field the points difference will count for nothing on Sunday."

Indeed, Pirlo insists that in spite of their advantageous position in the league, there will be no letting up in closing weeks of the season as Juve look to pull off a Serie A and Europa League double.

“I always play to win, always with the big objectives in mind," the Italy international declared. "This year it’s the Italian championship and the Europa League.

“The formation and the style of play might have changed in these three years [at Juve], but the desire has always been a constant.”

Pirlo joined Juve on a free transfer in 2011, after a decade with AC Milan.

AC Milan and Man United in transition, says Seedorf

AC Milan and Man United in transition, says Seedorf
The Rossoneri boss says there are definite similarities between the two clubs as they seek to remedy their current woes
AC Milan coach Clarence Seedorf believes the plight of his side this season is similar to that of Premier League champions Manchester United.

The former Netherlands midfielder took charge of the Rossoneri in January after the club parted ways with Massimiliano Allegri following a disastrous start to the campaign.

But despite beating Fiorentina 2-0 in Serie A on Wednesday, Seedorf has struggled to inject consistency into his side, but insists he needs time to make an impact just like David Moyes at Old Trafford.

He said: "AC Milan, just like Manchester United, are going through a period of transition and difficulty, but I'm sure they still have the desire to be competitive every year.

"It is clear at a time like this we need patience and I think the fans will see commitment. I am optimistic for the future of Milan."

Victory over Fiorentina still leaves Milan in 12th place in Serie A and Seedorf admits he is refusing to get carried away with the win.

"As a coach you feel different emotions," he added. The heart must be less strong than when you're a player. You manage your emotions better.

"We need to remember that at some points we haven't got the points we deserved from games and then we've had positive results and not followed them up with consistency.

"But we've played well in our last two games and I ask the boys to show me the same as they have done against Lazio and Fiorentina."

Cavani dodges Manchester United link: I'm a PSG player

Cavani dodges Manchester United link: I'm a PSG player
It has been claimed that the Red Devils are weighing up a summer bid for the Uruguay striker, who has been regularly deployed on the winger by Laurent Blanc this season
Edinson Cavani has refused to be drawn on speculation linking him with Manchester United, stating only that he is committed to Paris Saint-Germain.

It has been reported that the Premier League titleholders are considering a summer bid for the Uruguayan, who has not often been utilised in his preferred position in the centre of the attack since joining the French champions from Napoli last summer.

However, when asked about United's alleged interest in his services by beIN Sport on Friday evening, Cavani responded flatly: "I'm a Paris Saint-Germain player."

Cavani was speaking after playing a key role in PSG's 1-0 win over Nice, which came courtesy of a Timothee Kolodziejczak own goal.

The forward freely admitted that Laurent Blanc's men had not played well at the Allianz Riviere but he was nonetheless thrilled that they had warmed up for Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie with Chelsea with a victory.

"The important thing is that the ball finished in the net and that it was the best possible result for us," he enthused.

"It was important to win in terms of the championship but also in order to prepare well for the game against Chelsea."

PSG's win over Nice means that they are now 13 points clear of second-placed Monaco in the Ligue 1 standings.
