Greater connectivity : Demand for big data services to grow, says Intel

For Intel, the main highlights in 2013 were the release of Intel’s 4th Generation Core Processors, Intel’s Silvermont micro-architecture and Intel Atom Processor Z3000 series– which has been designed for tablets and smartphones.
KARACHI: The shifts in computing technology have taken place at an enormous pace in 2013 and Asia-Pacific remained a hotspot for technological innovation, according to Intel Pakistan’s marketing head. The chip-making giant says it sees increased connectivity that will boost the economy in 2014.
As more people get connected, demand for big data services will grow, said Asma Aziz who is Head of Public Relations and Marketing for Intel Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. She was briefing journalists during Intel’s year-end media roundtable on Tuesday. Intel Pakistan, in its year-end media briefing, looks at the technological shifts and advancements in the outgoing year and gives predictions for the upcoming year.
People’s interaction with technology is changing every year, resulting in emergence of all kinds of computing devices, such as all-in-ones, two-in-ones, convertibles and detachable, Aziz said in a presentation laden with the company’s CSR programs and product launches that took place last year.
In Pakistan, the use of data and connectivity is higher compared to many other markets in the world, Aziz said, adding the demand for big data services will grow in years to come.
International Data Corporation, a global research firm, projects the global big data technology and services market to grow at more than 31% each year, while revenues are forecast at $23.8 billion by 2016, according to Intel’s press release.
“In 2014, Asian technology companies will continue to set the pace for technological innovation,” Gregory Bryant, VP and GM, Intel Asia-Pacific and Japan was quoted in the statement as saying.
For Intel, the main highlights in 2013 were the release of Intel’s 4th Generation Core Processors, Intel’s Silvermont micro-architecture and Intel Atom Processor Z3000 series– which has been designed for tablets and smartphones.
The company predicts 2014 will bring rapid increase in emerging technologies as well as the emergence of a whole new sector for home entertainment as more and more TV shows, movies and content will be created for mobile devices.

SUKKUR:
Two students from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Sukkur, Asadullah and Imran Leghari, have developed a new app for Pakistani news watchers. The app – Pakistan News Cloud – collects Pakistan-related news from the internet and compiles them on the user’s Android phone.
“People are developing mobile apps for foreign companies and clients and making money, but we have designed this particular app for Pakistanis either living in the country or overseas,” says Asadullah, who is doing Masters in Computer Networks at IBA.
The app can be downloaded for free on all Android phones. Not only can people get Pakistani news on the app, they can also share the news with their friends and family through their mobile phones, he adds.
IBA has supported the app through its incubation centre.
Before this app, Asadullah says, people had to visit sites of different news agencies or newspapers for looking for news related to Pakistan, but now they can get all types of Pakistani news on one page. Initially, “we have developed this app for Android phones, but in the second phase we are going to update it for iPhones and Window phones.”
Imran Leghari is doing Masters in Marketing and is responsible for launching and marketing of the software. “Our next move is to launch this software for iPhones and Window phones and we are also planning to develop software for health and education issues,” he says.
They will also develop a software for Pakistani children living abroad, he adds, which will deal with Islamic education, teachings of the Quran and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and Namaz.
Leghari adds that in the near future they are also going to develop a security app for the people using Android phones. In case of an accident or mobile snatching, simply pressing a button will activate the software and five messages will be sent to five of the user’s contacts in five minutes, through which the receivers of the messages will know about the exact location of that person.
Both students praised their college and teachers for the help they provided.
Director Centre for Entrepreneurial Development and Leadership IBA, Ali Akbar Rizvi, while talking to The Express Tribune, said “We have developed the incubation centre for students to develop entrepreneurial skills.”
Rizvi expressed pride in his students’ work. People, he said, design such softwares to make money, but these students have come up with their product to serve the masses

Get the look: Winter Royalty

From the Hermes Birkin belt, to the gorgeous emerald green over-sized clutch, Shah was the epitome of royalty and exquisiteness.
Khadijah Shah, the woman behind design house Elan’s growing success, looked breath-taking in a posh ensemble at the Elan Polo Cup held last Sunday. From the Hermes Birkin belt, to the gorgeous emerald green over-sized clutch, Shah was the epitome of royalty and exquisiteness. Here is a breakdown of how you can get a similar look:
Hair
Shah’s hair looks stunning in those trendy blonde low-lights, blow-dried to perfection! Head to your nearest salon for some en-vogue streaks, but make sure to choose a shade that suits your complexion and style. After applying a frizz-free serum sparingly, blow-dry your hair using a paddle brush. Use a thick-barrel brush to add some volume at the crown.
Outfit
Shah is definitely keeping up with the trends in a cropped black blazer. The tailored fit complements her figure. Pairing it with a simple black tank top and a pair of skinnies, she lets the blazer speak for itself. Check out Mango (Rs6,000) or Debenhams (Rs8,000) for a similar jacket because, they lend a great deal of confidence to a woman and polish to a look.
Make-up
We are glad that unlike many, Shah chose a bright pink lip shade for the rather gloomy winter season. Well-defined eyes and peachy cheeks make her appear fresh and cheery. Try MAC’s Pink Noveau lipstick for a similar shade and Bare Minerals’ Ready blush in Aphrodisiac. Use Rimmel’s Exaggerate eyeliner for those precise sultry eyes.
Accessories and Shoes
Shah uplifts a simple, practical outfit with a bunch of posh and glamorous accessories. Although, a Hermes belt may not be within everyone’s reach, one can still style up a similar look with any chunky leather monogram belt in brown or camel, and such staples are totally making waves in the fashion sector. Check out Accessorize (Rs3,500) or Hub Leather (Rs5,000) for a similar belt. Her knee-high leather boots positively shout chic. Check out Charles & Keith (Rs6,000) or Nine West (Rs8,000) for a pair like hers.

Did you know?: Sana Safinaz launching web store in two weeks

Fashion design house Sana Safinaz has answered the prayers of women living abroad; the duo is finally branching out and launching an online store for their global clientele.
While speaking exclusively to The Express Tribune, Safinaz Muneer of the brand said, “It’s coming out very, very soon. We are looking at around two weeks from now.” Without sharing a tentative date, Safinaz elaborated on what they will be placing online, “We are placing everything that is in our retail store, even our lawn and spring/summer collections.” Without accessories? Safinaz says, “Accessories, not in the beginning, but in another two months.”
Since the beginning of 2013, Sana Safinaz prĂȘt stores have been popping up all over Pakistan, with one store in Lahore, three in Karachi, and two more stores set to open in both Islamabad and Lahore.
But why a web store now? “It’s better to go into retail first, and then hop on to the web store idea,” asserts Safinaz.
“We are very excited for now. Sana Safinaz will be available for those around the world we can’t reach personally. It is going to be amazing for the brand itself,” she adds.

Amina Hyatt: Tapping into online consumerism

Multi-talented entrepreneur feels that online retail is not only cost-effective but also customer-centric. PHOTOS: PUBLICITY
DUBAI:
Clad in a dusky pink blazer, chic printed top and a pair of dark navy skinnies, young entrepreneur Amina Hyatt makes quite a style statement as she struts into the club lounge of a posh hotel in Dubai, for an exclusive interview with The Express Tribune. Her immaculate sense of fashion is a reflection of why her brand is called High Street, and why has it grown exponentially in a relatively short span of time.
Hyatt introduced High Street, an umbrella brand that offers products from international chains like H&M, Zara, Forever 21, etc, in 2012, aimed at the modern, fashion-forward women of the East. However, Hyatt lives a rather multi-faceted professional life — she not only owns a brand but is also a stylist and a full-time fashion publicist based in the UAE. Despite never going to design school, and instead choosing a degree in Mass Communication, Hyatt was not deterred from taking a leap of faith into fashion retai
“I was always inclined towards fashion since an early age; I would try on my mother’s clothes and dress up my dolls all the time. I delved into the business of fashion when I was only doing my A levels by exporting Eastern wear to certain boutiques in UK, US. I was awarded the honour of being Pakistan’s Youngest Entrepreneur,” shares Hyatt. “I came to realise that fashion is one thing that comes to me naturally, so why not keep my options open and pursue a different degree.”
It goes without saying that she made a smart choice. Being a publicist in one of the most fashion lucrative countries has given her an opportunity to associate with big names in the industry. Her clients include luxury brands like Casadei, Krug Champagne, Giuseppe Zanotti Designs and Fabi, amongst others
“Being in the PR industry has helped me a lot in terms of marketing and promoting my brand. I am well aware of what areas I should focus on, and how to stay connected with the media in Pakistan. It has given me immense exposure as a professional,” Hyatt says.
However, unlike her contemporaries, Hyatt has embraced a more technological (and hence global) way of business  — e-commerce. While she started her venture by stocking at multi-brand stores like Labels and L’atelier in Islamabad, she soon transitioned to online retail. Now, with a Facebook page, an e-shop and associations with two external websites, Fashion Centraland The Warehouse, the talented stylista has tapped into Pakistan’s budding online consumer market.
“In order to stock up at an outlet, you have to pay a chunk of money over rent, and even then there is only a limited space offered to present your collection. However, Facebook and online websites are a great medium whereby you can upload an entire catalogue without incurring any additional costs and also grant easy access to your customers,” asserts Hyatt. “Pakistan is evolving in terms of fashion. There is a high demand for Western wear, but often people do not have access to credit cards and rely on their relatives to get them something. I noticed this existing gap and decided to reach the masses through my brand, which offers high quality Western wear at your doorstep.”
Despite competition from international brands like Mango and Monsoon, which have recently made their way into Pakistan’s metropolises, Hyatt maintains an edge. With an added advantage of having personal connections at manufacturing factories in Hong Kong, Hyatt is able to build up her inventory at a cheaper cost. In turn, her customers don’t pay a fortune for their favourite brand — prices range from Rs1,800 to a maximum of Rs5,500.
However, building a retail brand isn’t a layman’s job. She scours through magazines and catalogues on a regular basis to position herself strongly on the online platform. “It is my job every day to wake up and go through latest fashion magazines in order to gauge what’s currently trending. Pakistan, however, is a market that tends to follow trends later than the rest of the world. So I have to first make sure that I advertise the collection well on Facebook before selling it,” says Hyatt. “Pakistan is also a relatively conservative market; I have to be careful not to select pieces that are too revealing.”
Hyatt further differentiates her brand by offering a ‘Personal Shopper Service’ — a resource that many have overlooked. “People can book an appointment with a shopper and send their wish list of items that they want to purchase from specific stores. The shopper then buys them on behalf of the client and we courier it from Dubai. However, the service is currently only limited to high-end luxury brands,” Hyatt explains.
Believing in the famous quote; “style is eternal, fashion is temporary”, Hyatt passionately continues to expand her pet project. Her career paths maybe complex, but her philosophy for fashion remains simple: “don’t just follow trends; be at ease with your personal sense of style.

Guardiola tells Manchester City Neuer is not for sale

Guardiola tells Manchester City Neuer is not for sale
The Premier League outfit have been linked with a move for the Germany international, but the Bavarians' trainer insists that the 27-year-old is going nowhere
Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has warned Manchester City ahead of their Champions League Group D encounter on Tuesday they would be wasting their time by lodging a bid for goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The Premier League outfit have been linked with a big-money move for the Germany international amid reports that they are prepared to offload England No.1 Joe Hart, with Romanian shot-stopper Costel Pantilimon now Manuel Pellegrini's first-choice in the Premier League.

Neuer, meanwhile, has played an integral role in the Bavarian giants' success and Guardiola has insisted the 27-year-old will not be going anywhere.

"No chance," the Spaniard said when asked about the prospect of Neuer signing for City.

Neuer joined Bayern from Schalke in the summer of 2011 and has since developed into a key player at the Champions League holders.
The Germany international's current contract with Bayern runs until June 2016.

Kaka targets 100th Milan goal after 'difficult' time at Real Madrid

Kaka targets 100th Milan goal after 'difficult' time at Real Madrid
The attacking midfielder has revealed that he is happy to have put his struggles at the Santiago Bernabeu firmly behind him and is now hoping to reach a Rossoneri milestone
Kaka wants to lead AC Milan in the Champions League knockout stage by netting his 100th goal for the club in Wednesday's crucial Champions League against Ajax encounter, admitting that he wants to repay the fans for welcoming him back to San Siro after his "difficult" spell at Real Madrid.

The Brazilian left the Rossoneri for Los Blancos for a world-record €70 million in 2009 but struggled to reproduce his best form at the Santiago Bernabeu through a combination of injury and loss of confidence.

However, he is thriving again having returned to the Giuseppe Meazza on a free transfer this summer and, having taken his goals tally for Milan to 99 in their 3-1 win over Catania earlier this month, is eager to add to rack up his century in a game that Massimiliano Allegri's men need only a point from to progress to the last 16.

"I hope to score my 100th goal as soon as possible and it would be great to do so against Ajax on Wednesday," Kaka told reporters.

"The Milan shirt is like a second skin to me. I used to dream of wearing this shirt and I hope to continue doing so for many years.

"In Madrid I had a nice experience, but it was difficult as well. I’ve grown a lot professionally but I needed the warmth and faith of the Milan fans. I missed the Milanello atmosphere, the history of the club."
