Will Leonardo DiCaprio Be Third Time Lucky?

Leonardo-DiCaprio-411
Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio, who shot to fame with the historic Titanic, is planning to visit India soon. If all goes well he would be in India on January 4, 2014 for a four day trip and is expected to visit six cities.
Leonardo has been a part of some memorable films like Catch Me If You Can (2002)Gangs of New York (2002)The Aviator (2004)Blood Diamond (2006)The Departed (2006)Revolutionary Road (2008)Django Unchained (2012) and The Great Gatsby (2013). His films Shutter Island (2010) and Inception (2010) rank among the biggest commercial successes of his career.
However, Leonardo is not going to be in the country to promote his upcoming Martin Scorsesefilm The Wolf Of Wall Street, but to address a conference on entrepreneurship. The Wolf Of Wall Street releases in India around the third week on December. The film is directed by Martin Scorsese, is being distributed in India by PVR Pictures and MVP Entertainment.
On the professional front, Leonardo DiCaprio has signed on to produce a biopic about Bill Watterson, the media shy cartoonist who created Calvin and Hobbes. Leonardo has teamed up with Sherlock Holmes producer Roy Lee to make this biopic, which will focus on the creation of the comic strip and how the cartoonist coped with its unexpected success.
The film will be based on Dan Dollar‘s script A Boy And His Tiger and will be developed by Warner Bros, who bought the project and have reportedly fast tracked it to take advantage of the attention the cartoonist has received this year. Although the film is expected to move forward without input from Bill Watterson, it’s been suggested that it could be difficult to tell the story of the creator without it.
In fact, this is not the first time Leonardo is trying to come down to India. He has already made two unsuccessful attempts in the past. Once for a tiger conservation project earlier this year and the second time around he was supposed to come down to promote his film The Great Gatsby, that starred our superstar Amitabh Bachchan.
Lets see if Leonardo would be third time lucky and finally come down to India.

Naseeruddin Shah: A Walk in the Woods with the Motley Theatre Group

LAHORE:
With his gripping aura and stellar performances, Naseeruddin Shah is a crowd-puller, bar none. Unlike other Indian personalities, such as Mahesh Bhatt and Kuldip Nayar, who are frequent visitors to Lahore, Shah’s visits are of a different nature; he comes to connect with the cultural epicentre of Pakistan through theatre.
The Motley Theatre Group, which was created by Shah, Tom Alter and Benjamin Gilani in the year 1977, has been striving to bring quality theatre to people on both sides of the border. Although there has been limited media coverage of the Motley Theatre Group itself, Shah’s visits to Lahore always evoke interest in the group’s performances. On his recent visit, Shah’s Motley Theatre Group collaborated with Faiz Ghar to bring to the people of Lahore an adaptation of Lee Blessing’s Pulitzer prize winning play, A Walk in the Woods.
The play, which is being performed at the Alhamra Arts Council, opened to a fully packed audience on December 5, 2013. While some felt relieved to have scored seats for the play, others felt a sense of pride in being in the audience, since Shah’s contribution to theatre in Lahore has refuted criticism that the arts have left the city. Taking photographs and videos was strictly prohibited by the troupe to ensure that there were limited distractions for the actors.
Adeel Hashmi, a well-known commercial actor and grandson of the legendary Faiz Ahmad Faiz, made a short introductory note, where he clarified that the play was copyrighted and that the actors had done their best; now, it was up to the audience to make the play a success. And then, the lights dimmed and the play began.
The two-hour-long English play revolves around the relationship of a senior, cynical diplomat from Karachi, Pakistan named Jamaluddin Lutfullah (Shah) with Ram Chinappa (Rajit Kapur), a young, idealistic Indian negotiator, set against the backdrop of peace talks between Pakistan and India.
The set is sparse and comprises of trees and a wooden bench, where the two diplomats meet. In an attempt to ascribe meaning to what they do, the two characters engage in a dialogue that lasts over four seasons. Despite having polarised personalities, the two develop a ‘bromantic’ relationship as they deal with the harsh realities of their countries’ bilateral relations. They acknowledge that no matter how close they get to making it, their respective governments would ultimately avoid a peace deal.
Boasting great comedic timing and offering an overall entertaining experience, the play is a success. After the play, Shah thanked the audience as he took a bow. “Whenever I perform in Lahore, the audience gives me a great response and I hold the city very highly,” said Shah.
Shah’s wife, Ratna Pathak, is the director of the play. Originally Shah, along with Faisal Rashid and Randeep Hooda, were planning to direct. A thoughtful director, Pathak hopes that the audience takes something away from the performance and that the play delivers a thought-provoking message.
“Putting together a play of this scale is ambitious; whenever we reach out to the Motley Theatre Group, who are our friends, we find nothing but goodwill,” remarks Salima Hashmi, who is Faiz’s daughter and an organiser of the event. She recited some beautiful verses of her father’s poetry during the evening’s proceedings.
Cultural icon and good friend of Shah’s, Yousuf Salahuddin, describes Shah as a lover of both Lahore and the arts. He says that Shah values the opportunity to perform in Lahore, and bringing his theatre troupe here brings immense satisfaction to the actor, mainly because it promotes positive relations and cultural interchange across borders.
“While film is something he has always maintained he does for money, theatre is very important to him because he is very interested in the arts, Faiz and poetry,” says Salahuddin. More importantly, a lot of time and effort goes into the planning of his tours to Lahore. Just last year, Shah brought his complete production team to Pakistan and performed renditions of Ismat Chughtai’s poetry.
“It’s really amazing. He is the perfect ambassador and has the ability to cast a lasting influence on people. Just one look at the people he spends time with when he comes to Lahore — students, teachers, intellectuals — can show you how important and far-reaching his work is.”
The play was performed again on December 6, and will be followed by 3 stories by PremChand on December 7 and 8, in which Shah will also be performing. Tickets priced between Rs1000-3000 will be available through Faiz Ghar

Chinese filmmaker faces billion-yuan lawsuit over children

BEIJING: Top Chinese film director Zhang Yimou is facing a billion-yuan lawsuit after violating the country’s controversial one-child policy, state media reported Friday.
Zhang’s case has brought renewed debate over what critics say is the selective enforcement of China’s late-1970s family-planning law, which restricts most couples to one child but is frequently flouted by the wealthy and well-connected.
Two lawyers filed a lawsuit Thursday in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi, the hometown of Zhang’s wife, suing the director of “Red Sorghum” and “Raise the Red Lantern” for a total of one billion yuan ($164 million).
“The rich have become increasingly audacious by violating the family planning policy just because they are rich enough to pay the fine… and they take an extra share of resources from society,” one of the lawyers, Jia Fangyi, said in a statement reported by state-run newspaper China Daily.
“It’s unfair to the poor and those who strictly follow the national policy,” he added
The two lawyers are claiming 500 million yuan in “compensation for public resources” and another 500 million yuan in punitive damages, the China Daily said.
Zhang, one of China’s best-known filmmakers and the director of the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, had faced rumours for months that he had fathered as many as seven children with several different women.
Amid increasing pressure – including a Nanjing newspaper’s publication last month of a front-page “wanted” poster seeking information on his whereabouts – Zhang finally issued an apology on Sunday through his studio’s microblogging account.
He acknowledged that he has two sons and a daughter with his current wife, as well as another daughter with his ex-wife.
Chinese media reports have speculated that Zhang could face a penalty as high as 160 million yuan, but authorities have not released any figures.
Fines for violators of China’s one-child policy are a significant source of income for China’s provincial governments.
In 2012, 24 of the country’s 31 provinces and regions collected a total of nearly 20 billion yuan ($3.3 billion) in penalties, the Beijing News reported Thursday. None of the provincial authorities has detailed how the money was spent.

Afghanistan won't bow to US "pressure" over security pact: Official

KABUL: A senior aide to Afghan President Hamid Karzai accused the United States on Friday of trying to pressure elements of his government to accept a security deal that would shape the post-2014 US military presence in the country.
The bilateral security pact (BSA) was thrown into doubt last month when Karzai said he would sign only if new conditions were met, and even then only after April elections.
If the pact is not signed Washington says it will consider a complete military withdrawal from Afghanistan, which remains embroiled in the insurgency of the militant Taliban.
Failure to sign could also put Western aid running to billions of dollars in serious jeopardy, exposing the central Asian country’s shaky economy to collapse.
US Secretary of State John Kerry, National Security Advisor Susan Rice and Washington’s top diplomat for Afghanistan and Pakistan, James Dobbins, have all visited Karzai recently to convince him to sign by the end of the year.
“There is no doubt that certain elements within the Afghan government are facing pressure from the US. However, this will not achieve anything,” Karzai’s spokesperson, Aimal Faizi, told Reuters in an emailed statement.
“If there is a perception in Washington that certain elements in Kabul can force President Karzai to succumb to any pressure, it is seriously flawed and mistaken.”
Faizi declined to elaborate on who these “elements” were.
US embassy in Kabul declined to respond, with embassy spokesperson Robert Hilton only repeating that it was the view of the United States that signing the document “promptly” was in the interests of both countries.
On Wednesday Karzai reacted angrily to a comment by Kerry at a NATO meeting in Brussels that the Afghan defence minister, Bismillah Khan Mohammadi, could sign the document instead of the president.
A year-long negotiation over the text of the document was thought to have been concluded last month when an assembly of Afghan tribal elders and politicians, called a loya jirga, approved the pact.
But Karzai surprised everyone during concluding remarks by saying he still had important demands. They relate to a desire for the United States to kick-start a nascent peace process with the Taliban, and an end to raids on Afghan homes by US forces pursuing militants.
“We cannot allow business as usual for the US after the signing of the BSA,” Faizi said. “It simply cannot be another ten-year chapter of raids on Afghan homes, civilian casualties and seeking peace in Afghanistan.”
On Thursday, influential US Democratic Senator Carl Levin questioned the Obama administration’s insistence that Karzai was the appropriate person to sign a security deal, and by the end of 2013.
In a letter to US President Barack Obama, Levin suggested Washington wait for a “more reliable” leader to take office.
Troop numbers
There are 47,000 US troops in Afghanistan.
The United States has been in discussions with Afghan officials about keeping a residual force of about 8,000 troops after the end of the NATO combat mission next year

FIFA World Cup: Spain kick off with Dutch rematch, England handed tough draw

COSTA DO SAUIPE: Reigning champions Spain will begin their defence of the World Cup with a rematch of the 2010 final against the Netherlands in Salvador on June 12 next year after the finals draw was made on Friday.
Spain, who beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the final in South Africa thanks to a solitary extra-time goal by Andres Iniesta, were also handed a repeat meeting with Chile, having defeated the South Americans in the group stage last time around.
Australia complete the line-up in a tough-looking Group B, but there were arguably even tougher draws elsewhere.
England find themselves in Group D along with Uruguay, Costa Rica and Italy.
A meeting with Uruguay, the 2011 Copa America winners and semi-finalists at the last World Cup promises to be a hard enough test for England in their second match in Sao Paulo on June 19.
However, before that they must face Italy in their opening game in the heat of northern city Manaus on June 15 in a repeat of the Euro 2012 quarter-final, which Italy won on penalties.
Germany and Portugal were drawn together in a testing Group G that also included Ghana and the United States.
The two European nations will meet in their first match in Salvador on June 16.
The draw was kinder to host nation Brazil, however, as they seek to make up for their failure to lift the trophy when they last hosted the finals back in 1950.
Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side will face Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon in Group A, with their opening match against the Croatians in Sao Paulo in June 12.
That will be the first game of the month-long competition, which will also see Argentina take on Iran, Nigeria and the only tournament debutants, Bosnia-Herzegovina, in Group F.
After scraping through qualifying via a play-off, France were drawn in Group E with neighbours Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras.
Colombia will face Greece, the Ivory Coast and Japan in Group C, while Belgium, another of the potential dark horses, will meet Algeria, Russia and South Korea in Group H.
