Will the wait for Waiting for Godot pay off?

KARACHI:
NAPA’s (National Academy Performing Arts) first production in English is a development that will open up many avenues in theatre, and finding a better way to kick things off than the combination of Samuel Beckett’s words and Zia Moheyeddin’s theatrical genius is unlikely. The details of the play, titled Waiting for Godot, were unveiled at a press conference held at the Napa premises on Tuesday evening.
Waiting for Godot is about two vagrant men who are waiting in vain for someone or something they call ‘Godot’. They wait endlessly at random places, sometimes near a tree, or on a barren stretch of road, encapsulating a drama woven in their own consciousness. What plays out is a comic wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes and nonsense, which has been interpreted as a solemn outline of mankind’s inexhaustible search for meaning.
The play has previously been performed in Urdu as Insha Ka Intezaar by Tehrik-e-Niswan, and other theatre groups, in both English and Urdu. With Zia Moheyeddin’s genius pulling the strings behind the curtain, coupled with Beckett’s avant-garde dialogues, the expectations from this theatrical tour de force are sky high.
“Zia sahab wanted to reach Beckett’s intentions,” Zain Ahmed, the artistic director of Napa, told The Express Tribune. “It is not an adaptation; it is not a translation, but a very faithful attempt at executing a play that was a turning point in the history of theatre.”
In his director’s note about the play, Moheyeddin states that, “Waiting for Godot is a tragicomedy, and one of the true masterpieces of the 20th century. It doesn’t tell a story, and it doesn’t have a plot that can be summarized in the form of a narrative. This is a play unlike any other that you have ever come across.”
He further adds, “The subject of the play is not Godot, but waiting. The act of waiting is an essential aspect of the human condition. Throughout our lives we always wait for something, and Godot simply represents the object of our waiting. Godot could be an event, a thing or even death.”
Since only a handful of Napa graduates are experienced in performing in English, Moheyeddin has chosen most actors from outside Napa this time around. Ali Junejo is one of those select few. Junejo has previously written, directed and performed in plays under the banner of Dadadali productions, and he feels that being a part of Waiting for Godot has been a pleasant change from his usual routine.
“The sort of stuff that I was working on earlier included a huge amount of personal effort because I, along with my co-director, used to do everything. This time around however, I am at the complete disposal of none other than Zia sahab himself.”
Junejo is excited firstly at the prospect that he’ll be playing Vladimir, a character significant to the history of theatre, and secondly, that he is being directed by Moheyeddin while he does so.
“The sort of training and experience Zia sahab has as a director only makes me more confident [in the faithful adaptation of this play],” says Junejo. “He knows a lot about the background [of the play] and has a very clear picture in mind, but at the same time gives us room to bring in our own flavour. As long as you know what you’re doing, he is not stifling,” says Junejo.
Alongside Junejo, the cast includes Fawad Khan, Faris Khalid, Ameed Riaz and Aaliya Moheyeddin and will be staged at Napa from November 21 till December 8 (Thursdays to Sundays).

Ramos hopes to be the next

Ramos hopes to be the next

Real Madrid agreed a contract extension with Cristiano Ronaldo and has improved the contracts of Diego López and Pepe, but now next in line is Sergio Ramos, who is also soon hoping to receive good news about an improved contract. The club does not usually negotiate with players until the final two years of a contract and Ramos is currently signed up until 2017.
The defender currently earns around €5.5 million but according to Florentino Pérez it is the two captains Casillas and Ramos who earn the most in the squad after Cristiano Ronaldo, while Gareth Bale would be the next best paid player.
The signing of Ramos was a personal request of the President who hopes the player will retire having played his entire career at the club. That is also the intention of Ramos who arrived at the club from Sevilla as a kid. Now however he is one of the most important players in the squad and will expect to be rewarded well for that.

Motorola Moto G is a quad-core, colorful smart phone for $179

(Credit: Andrew Hoyle/CNET)
Motorola's Moto X brightened up our lives with its numerous colour options, its decent lineup of specs and its reasonable price tag. As a US-only phone however, it was a bit of a let down for those of us living outside of America.
Motorola's new Moto G brings a near identical design, a host of colours, a 720p 4.5-inch display and a ludicrously cheap price tag.
It'll start at $179 for the 8GB model or $199 for 16GB of storage. In the UK, the Moto G will be available on pay as you go rom O2 from £130. It'll be available from today in Brazil and parts of Europe and will hit the US and the wider world in January.

Design and display

With its curving, minimalist back panel and plastic ridge around the front screen, the Moto G looks basically the same as the Moto X. It's a simple design, that eschews the industrial, almost aggressive look of the kevlar weave-coated Razr phones.
It has a 4.5-inch display, rather than the 4.7-inches of the Moto X, but its body is almost exactly the same size. We found the Moto X to be very comfortable to hold so hopefully the G will feel similarly nice, although it would have been nice to see a slight reduction in size to make it slide a little easier into those tight jeans.
The Moto G will be available in a variety of garish colours, including turquoise and purple, or you can opt for a plain black version if you don't want to stand out too much. The Moto X is highly customisable with numerous different colours and finishes available -- including a rather smart wood casing. It's not known yet whether the Moto G will have similar personalising options.
Like Google's Nexus 4, the Moto G will come with either 8 or 16GB of storage. It doesn't have external SD card support, so if you store a lot of music locally, or download massive games then you should seriously consider opting for the larger capacity model. You'll also get 65GB of free online storage through Google Drive.
The phone's 4.5-inch display has the same 1,280x720-pixel resolution as the Moto X, but the smaller screen size means the pixels are more tightly packed. The Moto G therefore has a slightly higher pixel density of 329 pixels per inch, edging out the Moto X's 312ppi. In everyday use however, I seriously doubt you'd notice much difference.

Software and processor

The Moto G comes running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Although quite a recent version of the software, given that Motorola is now owned by Google it's a little surprising not to see the latest Android 4.4 KitKat on board, although Motorola is guaranteeing an update to the new software by January next year.
The Moto X came with touchless voice control that allowed you to dictate messages, emails, set calendar appointments or search for information simply by saying "Okay, Google Now" to the phone, followed by your commands. It's likely that the Moto G will have similar voice control features.
It's powered by a quad-core processor, rather than the dual-core chip found in the Moto X, although it has a slower 1.2GHz clock speed, as opposed to the 1.7GHz of the Moto X's chip. How much of a difference that makes in everyday use remains to be seen.

Camera and battery

Around the back of the Moto G is a 5-megapixel camera. That's a big step down from the cameras you'll find on the top-end smart phones -- the Sony Xperia Z1 has a 21-megapixel sensor and the Nokia Lumia 1020 boasts a ludicrous 41-megapixels -- but considering the massively lower price, that's probably a fair trade off.
So long as the camera is good enough to snap instagram pictures of your food or capture your cat doing something utterly adorable to share on Facebook, I'll be satisfied. The camera does have a few tricks up its sleeve including an HDR mode, panorama mode, burst mode as well as the ability to shoot slow-motion video. There's also a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calling over Google Hangouts or Skype.
The camera app looks very minimalistic, but Motorola reckons it makes it very simple to flick between settings and shooting modes.
Providing the juice for the phone is a 2,070mAh battery, which Motorola promises will get "all day battery", thanks to power-efficient software tweaks. As always, your own battery life will depend completely on how you use the phone. If you play demanding games all day with the screen brightness on max, you shouldn't expect much or any battery left when you go to bed.

Outlook

With its 720p screen and 1.2Ghz processor, the Motorola Moto G isn't challenging the smart phone elite, but those specs are seriously impressive for a phone with such a cheap price tag. I'll have to wait for the full review before giving a final verdict, but on paper it looks like an astonishing buy for anyone not wanting the biggest, best hardware in their pocket.

Life after Real

Life after Real
HUGO CEREZO 11/13/2013
There is life after Real Madrid - a fact being demonstrated by those players who left the 'Los Blancos' club last summer. The change of lifestyle has been very positive for Higuaín, Callejón and Albiol in Napoli, Özil in Arsenal, Carvalho in Monaco, and Kaká in Milan.
Özil found his feet straight away at the Emirates. Arsenal is top of the Premier League thanks to his left foot, with which he has scored three goals and set up six more. The German is also the player with the highest number of shirt sales in the UK.
Napoli is again dreaming of the 'Scudetto' title courtesy of CallejónAlbiol and Higuaín. The Argentine forward no longer has to rotate for starter status. He has scored eight goals in 14 games. Callejón is not far behind, with seven goals in 16 games.
Albiol is also a regular starter, not the fourth centre-back, as he was in Real Madrid. He has played in 14 ties, all in the starting eleven, helping him to keep his place in the Spanish national team.
Kaká is also smiling again in Italy, still set on making it to the World Cup in Brazil. Across the Alps, Carvalho is the omnipresent player in Monaco. The Portuguese centre-back, at 35 years old, has not missed a single minute of the Ligue. Playing alongside him is the former Real academy player Fabinho, who has been in the starting line up for nine matches.
The exception to the rule is provided by Essien, having only played in two League Cup matches with Chelsea, and Adán, who continues to train separately from the team in Marbella, waiting for an offer.

Man buys cheap desk on Craigslist, finds $98,000 inside

The honest rabbi. And his desk.
(Credit: WTNH-TV Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)
In today's edition of "Your Morals, Tested," we ask what would you do if you found an ungodly amount of money attached to a casual online purchase?
Please imagine your name is Noah Muroff and you live in Connecticut.
You buy a desk on Craigslist for $200. When you bring it home, it almost fits through your door, but not quite.
So you begin to dismantle it a little, just to squeeze it in.
Behind one of the drawers, you find a plastic bag. You hope it's not cocaine, because that might take a touch of explaining.
Instead, when you open it, you discover money. When you have finished counting the money, you have counted $98,000.

That much money raises questions. Who puts that much money behind a desk drawer? And why? Who would know it was there? And how could anyone prove it was there?
I have omitted one small detail. Noah Muroff is a rabbi. As WTNH-TV reports, his moral code wouldn't allow him to even contemplate accepting this windfall as an act of God.
"Right away my wife and I sort of looked at each other and said, 'We can't keep this money,'" he told WTNH.
So he called the woman from whom he'd bought the desk.
Her response: "Oh my gosh, because I... oh my God." Well, indeed.
You might, at this point, be wondering what sort of money this was. The woman, who only gave her name as Patty, said it was her inheritance -- hidden long ago and then forgotten.
In a thank you note she sent to Muroff, Patty said: "I do not think there are too many people in this world that would have done what you did by calling me."
Many might agree with Patty -- the same many who would have kept the money.
Yahoo News reports that Muroff even took his whole family -- including his four kids -- with him to Patty's house, so that they could understand the value of honesty.
She reportedly insisted on refunding his purchase money and gave him a reward.
The moral of the story is very simple: if you're selling something on Craigslist, make sure you haven't stashed a ton of cash in there. The chances of selling it to a rabbi are slim.

Waar all set for UK release

The number of screens, cities and locations are still being finalised. PHOTO: FILE
Despite the British Board of Film Censors’ approval to screen Waar in the UK, Director Bilal Lashari reveals it could take up to two weeks for the movie to officially release.

Waar has been approved for release with no cuts. However, it will take 10 to 15 days to release because we are negotiating with distributors,” Lashari tells The Express Tribune.
The number of screens, cities and locations are still being finalised.
In an earlier interview, Lashari said that he was gearing up for the international release ofWaar, and was in talks with various distributors.
The Pakistani film has grossed Rs190 million since its release on Eidul Azha alongside Bollywood flick Boss. Boss closed at Rs40 million at the local box office.
There has also been some speculation about the film’s release in India. Bilal Lashari said, “I have not approached anyone specifically for distribution in India.” Given the theme of the film and the perception that ‘Waar shows India as cause of nation’s problems’, the director says, “I have no idea how people will react, but it would be great if it ends up being screened. A lot of people are saying it’s never going to happen.”
The movie was released on 42 screens across Pakistan and beat the box office record for an opening day take of Rs11.4 million.
It is an action/thriller and drama film, written by Hassan Waqas Rana and stars Pakistan’s actors, Shaan Shahid and Shamoon Abbasi. The storyline has been inspired by the war on terror in Pakistan and its effects on the world, but with a stylised interpretation of it.

Thor: The Dark World thunders to top of US-Canada charts

3D comedy Free Birds, starring Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson, earned the third slot. PHOTOS: FILE
NEW YORK: Marvel superhero Thor pounded his box office competitors over the weekend, muscling sequel Thor: The Dark World to the top of US and Canadian charts with a hefty $86.1 million in debut ticket sales.
The 3D film starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston trounced last week’s top movies. Raunchy comedy Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa finished in second place with $11.3 million from Friday through Sunday, according to hollywood.com.
Free Birds, the 3D movie featuring the voices of Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson as turkeys, that team up and travel back in time to get turkey off Thanksgiving dinner plates, earned the third slot with $11.2 million, finishing just ahead of senior citizen buddy comedyLast Vegas, which took in $11.1 million.
According to a distributor at Walt Disney Co., Thor: The Dark World hauled in $94 million from the international markets, where it has been playing since October 30. IMAX showings added another $11 million globally, putting its combined global ticket sales through Sunday in the ballpark of $327 million.
The new Thor installment co-stars Portman as the love interest for Hemsworth’s Thor, the Nordic God of thunder, who battles to save his homeland of Asgard from evil forces. Hiddleston plays Thor’s villainous brother Loki, who might just find redemption for his past misdeeds this time around.
Despite having a stronger opening than the original Thor movie, which debuted with $65.7 million in May 2011, Thor 2 fell a bit short of industry forecasts that estimated it would kick off with up to $92 million at North American (US and Canadian) theatres.
Thor also appeared in the 2012 blockbuster The Avengers, which helped stoke interest in the character and his standalone film. According to a poll by Fandango.com, 72% of ticket buyers said their fond memories of Thor in The Avengers influenced their choice to see Thor: The Dark World.
Given that the sequel cost $170 million to make, execs at Disney appear to be happy with its opening weekend performance. “It’s a great start,” said Dave Hollis, the Executive Vice President of distribution for Walt Disney Studios, adding that they would have considered “anything north of $80 million to be a good result”. Hollis also noted that the film was playing especially well with family audiences.
Last week’s box office winner, the sci-fi thriller Ender’s Game, fell to fifth place, taking in $10.3 million after a steep 62% drop in box office receipts.
