Vettel reigns as Indian GP gets go-ahead

GREATER NOIDA: Champion-elect Sebastian Vettel set a record-breaking pace in Indian Grand Prix free practice yesterday as the troubled race got the go-ahead when a court challenge was postponed.
The 26-year-old has insisted he’s in no rush to wrap up the title but he was a man in a hurry at Buddh International Circuit, setting new quickest laps in both practice runs.
Vettel, who only needs to finish in the top five to seal his fourth straight world title, clocked one minute 26.68 seconds in the first practice and improved with 1:25.72 in the second, surpassing his own 2011 record of 1:27.24.
Vettel was delighted with the practice sessions, but warned that Red Bull still had a lot of work remaining ahead of Sunday’s race, especially on the tyres.
“Obviously the soft tyre is not lasting very long,” Vettel told reporters. “The track is rubbering in, but it will improve and it should be better tomorrow.
Vettel had a chance of sealing the championship without leaving the garage, before India’s Supreme Court delayed hearing a petition for its cancellation in a row over taxes.
Cancellation would have left Vettel 90 points ahead in the standings with only 75 available from the final three races in Abu Dhabi, the United States and Brazil.
But the Supreme Court in New Delhi said it would hear the petition, related to allegations of unpaid entertainment taxes from last year’s race, next week

Movie review: 'Escape Plan' - action-packed but predictable

Escape Plan movie poster. PHOTO: PUBLICITY
With a wafer-thin plot line and two iconic action heroes in one frame, Escape Plan offers a predictably rousing fare that could act as a tutorial for prisoners intending to break free.
The film begins in a very linear, clandestine fashion where a prisoner (Sylvester Stallone), after escaping from the tightly secured Bendwater Penitentiary Institution, Colorado, reveals to the officials that he is Ray Breslin, a consultant and security expert who exposes the vulnerabilities of the state prisons. He further gives the jailor a step-by-step detailed account of how he managed to break free.
While the jail officials are not happy with the revelation, the CIA approaches Ray Breslin and his team with an assignment to check the loopholes in one of the new facility for the world’s most dangerous criminals. The whereabouts of this facility are not disclosed for security reasons.
Lured with a promising fee, Breslin’s manager pushes him to accept the offer saying, “I am the numbers guy and you are the artist who can escape from any prison made by man.” Breslin concedes.
The flow of events doesn’t go as planned. Nevertheless, Breslin lands up in this tightly secured place and finds himself at the mercy of the prison’s sadistic warden Hobbes (Jim Caviezel). After evaluating his chances of escape as practically impossible, he reveals his true identity to Hobbes. But the warden refuses to listen, leaving him with no alternative but to try the impossible.
The first 30 minutes of the film drags, though there is ample action – both physical and verbal. The screen lights up only when Stallone hooks up with Schwarzenegger to collaborate against Hobbes and his cronies.
Though Mikael Hafstrom’s film is spiked with intelligent analytical skills, bullets, brawls and wit, the film lacks the punch. While the actors punch each other, the entire action seems fake and anticipated in an especially drawn-out plot.
In fact, at one stage when Schwarzenegger mockingly informs Stallone, “You hit like a vegetarian”, it just makes you realise how true he is.
Stallone and Schwarzenegger, both action heroes have intense harmony on screen. They complement each other with their histrionics and banter. While Schwarzenegger is charismatic and chirpy, Stallone broods with his constantly grumpy mannerisms. What’s more? The exposition of Breslin’s motive is lost in Stallone’s drawl, thereby killing the entire emotional spirit of the tale.
Jim Caviezel is sleek and polished as the sharp and wicked warden. His soft-spoken intellectualism contrasts well against the beefy pair.
The film is supported by a team of brilliant actors that include, Sam Neill as Dr. Emil Kaikev, Farhan Thahir as Javeed, Vincent D’Onofrio as Lester Clark, Breslin’s Manager and Amy Ryan as Abigail, Breslin’s colleague. They provide extra seriousness to the narration that the script doesn’t really deserve.
The production value of the film is good. The vertical cells with glass walls and frugal layout patrolled by identically masked men gives a very futuristic feel.
What’s good about Escape Plan is that it is clean and not at all contemptuous till the very end.
Watch it if you are Stallone or Schwarzenegger fans.

KARACHI:
In the span of a year or so, 25-year-old Talal Qureshi has established himself as one of Pakistan’s hottest producers/DJs. Without much help from the mainstream media, which mostly focuses on pop bands and commercial artistes like Strings and Atif Aslam, Qureshi has managed to make his mark as an electronic musician.
His latest single is called Lollicops, the video of which has been directed by the uber-talented duo Shahbaz Shigri and Aisha Linnea (they also directed Adil Omar’s infamous Paki Rambo, which bagged a Lux Style Award nomination in 2012). The song is smooth and textured but is not ‘dhikchick dhikchick’ beat upon beat. Hilarious, quirky and memorable, the music video features two characters playing cops. They suck on lollipops and party with stuffed teddy bears before ripping them apart. What’s funnier is singer-songwriter Adil Omar’s appearance in the video. In what is a gimmick that takes a harmless dig at the police force scenario in our country, the song and video are full of flavour and punch.
This isn’t the only video that Qureshi has released in recent weeks. He collaborated with Taimoor Salahuddin (Mooroo’s Music) on the music video of Clubbing in Multan. The song title is edgy, the video even edgier! Directed by Salahuddin, the video is fresh and exciting. It stars Adil Omar as the slick, suited villain and Qureshi, who is on the run with a briefcase and punk girl. The car chase scene between them is fun and exceptionally well-shot. At one point, Adil does some exaggerated dance moves before getting into a scuffle with the punk girl. The video doesn’t promote violence just like Ali Zafar’s Aag didn’t. It’s merely a concept that both the videos depicted. But where Ali’s video has no place for humour, Clubbing in Multan is drenched in dark humour.
While Lollicops is smooth, Clubbing in Multan has a bigger musical canvas and stays stuck in your head long after you hear it. The collaboration between Qureshi and Mooroo’s Music is not a one-off. Qureshi remixed a beautiful and nostalgic song Tasveer by Mooroo’s Music. “I’m producing few tracks for Mooroo, he’s a great musician and I love working with him,” reveals Talal and continues, “I’m releasing a new track soon, which is called The Whirling Ruckus. It is a collaborative track with Usman Riaz. My collaborative EP with Adil Omar will come out soon, probably around December/January. We’re still recording and producing it right now. I don’t really want to give away too much but I’ll say this EP will be the best thing to come out of Pakistan.”
In a quick conversation, Talal Qureshi talks remixes, electronic music and plans for the future.
Tell us about remixing Meesha Shafi’s Dhol Bajay Ga and Attaullah Khan Essakhelvi’s Kameez Teri Kaali.
Kameez Teri Kaali has to be the most random tune I’ve mixed so far. I believe this remix has paved the way for me to reach out to these people and take my music to them. As for Meesha, I’m a fan. I messaged her and told her that I am interested in remixing one of her tracks. I personally liked her song Dhol Bajay Ga, so I pitched it to her and she thought the output would certainly be interesting. I decided to do a traphop mix of it. The response was great! The great thing was that it got premiered on BBC Radio1/BBC Asian Network before it was released over the internet.
Are your songs played on local radio stations?
I think I get more international airplays than local ones. My tracks are on heavy rotation in the UK on the BBC Asian Network/BBC Radio1 and my music has been featured on radio stations in Finland, Austria, Iceland, Germany, Japan, India and Belgium.
How does Pakistan respond to Talal Qureshi?
I think they are slowly getting to know what I do. I have a stable fan base, which is growing day by day. I really want to play a part in building an electronic music industry in Pakistan, so I try to help them with anything that is possible.
You’ve signed up with a UAE-based record label. Can you throw some light on it?
Yes, recently, I was called to Dubai by this upcoming electronic music record label, Dubro Records. They have great plans that work and sync with my ideas for the stuff I want to do in future. That is the reason I signed up with them. This label has been launched by a really talented EDM producer/friend Zohaib Naveed (Y2Z).

Wenger wouldn’t be surprised at Sir Alex Ferguson managerial U-turn

Wenger wouldn’t be surprised at Sir Alex Ferguson managerial U-turn
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says that he would not be too surprised if Sir Alex Ferguson decided to return to football management.
The legendary Scot retired from his role as Manchester United boss at the end of last season, bringing an end to an unprecedented 27 years in charge of the Premier League giants, with David Moyes replacing the 71-year-old.
United have, however, made a disappointing start to the 2013-14 campaign, with the Red Devils currently occupying eighth place in the table, and Wenger would not be shocked should Ferguson make a sensational return.
He told reporters: 'In six months you will know more about whether he could come back. You cannot rule it completely out.
'It is difficult to take a drug for 30 years and suddenly get rid of it.'
Wenger also discussed Jack Wilshere's fitness struggles, confident that he will not have to carefully manage the Gunners midfielder for his entire career despite concerns over his ankle injury.
'It's difficult for us to find the right rhythm for him,' the Frenchman added. 'Before, I always played him and people say I overplayed him. Now I try to be a bit more cautious.
'It's difficult because his ankle is up and down a little bit. The ankle is still getting better but it's still inflamed sometimes and responds sometimes to games but, after that, it goes down again and is normal. I think he will go through this period of stabilisation. It's going upwards but sometimes you wonder: Do I take a gamble or not?
'It's not something he will have to deal with for the rest of his career. I do what the medical people recommend with him because I am not a specialist. They are quite positive about him.'

Robben must clear his head – Guardiola

Robben must clear his head – Guardiola
Pep Guardiola insists Arjen Robben understands his decisions over penalty takers following a recent public row between the head coach and the Bayern Munich star.
Robben was visibly annoyed when Guardiola called for Thomas Muller to take a spot kick against Mainz last weekend and the Dutchman then refused orders to take the penalty against Viktoria Plzen on Wednesday.
Franck Ribery, who himself stepped up to take the kick at the Allianz Arena, admitted after the match that Robben was still irked with Guardiola over his decision last Saturday, and the Bayern coach has now called on the 29-year-old to 'clear his head' over the issue.
'Arjen knows why I chose Thomas Muller on Saturday and now he knows why I chose him in the Champions League. But Arjen must clear his head, which it seems he hadn't,' Guardiola told De Telegraaf.
The former Barcelona boss went on to praise the work of Johan Cruyff in modern football, describing him as the most important figure in the development of the game.
'Johan is the most influential person in football around the world. He was an amazing player, but also a great coach,' said the 43-year-old.
'He has left so much beauty at my previous club. But not only at Barcelona do you see his influence. You see it in all the players who worked under him and those who took over from him. His influence went much further.'

‘I don’t want to transform Bayern into a new Barca’ – Guardiola

‘I don’t want to transform Bayern into a new Barca’ – Guardiola
Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola insists he is not trying to create a replica of his Barcelona squads. The 42-year-old enjoyed a trophy-laden four-year spell in charge at Camp Nou, winning 14 trophies including three Liga titles and two Champions League crowns. After departing the Spanish champions at the end of the 2011-12 campaign, Guardiola took a season-long sabbatical before taking over a Bayern side that completed a Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB-Pokal treble last season. The Spaniard has overseen an impressive start to the season, winning seven and drawing two of their nine league fixtures and taking nine points from their three Champions League games - with onlookers drawing comparisons between Bayern and the Blaugrana.Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he said: 'I don't want to transform Bayern into a new Barca.'The mentality is different, and the style, the environment, the culture, the players too. This club has won too much to copy others.'I came here because I wanted to coach these players.'Bayern Munich are bigger than my ideas. I have only to maintain last season's level, of an unbeatable team that played in an incredible way.'A coach must understand the qualities of his men and be able to take advantage of these.'Bayern continue their Bundesliga campaign when they welcome Hertha Berlin to the Allianz Arena on Saturday.
